The Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF), a US-based not-for-profit arts organisation dedicated to promoting literary quality, diversity and public appreciation of speculative fiction, is currently inviting applications from across the globe to its Working Class Writers Grant programme. The programme is designed to support speculative fiction writers from working class or financially disadvantaged backgrounds to help overcome barriers to participation in the literary world.
The deadline for applications is Wednesday 30th September 2026.
The Working Class Writers Grant aims to address the underrepresentation of working class, blue-collar, financially disadvantaged, or homeless writers in the field of speculative fiction by providing targeted support to those facing financial barriers to literary participation. The grant is designed to help writers who have struggled to access resources such as computers, books, tuition, or the ability to attend conventions and workshops, and who often have limited time to write due to multiple jobs or economic hardship. The grant awards $1,000 USD (£742) to one writer annually, with the option for recipients to accept the grant anonymously or pseudonymously. Eligible applicants include international writers who identify as working class or financially disadvantaged, such as those who qualify for government assistance, live pay check-to-pay check, rely on payday loans, are supporting themselves through college or have experienced food insecurity or poverty. For further information, including details about how to enter the competition, please visit the Speculative Literature Foundation website.
