Sonica 2024: applications invited from artists from all backgrounds and any career stage, based in the UK or Ireland; (application deadline: 4th December 2023)

Cryptic is looking for UK and Ireland based artists who create sonic installations, Audio-Visual (AV) performances and real time visuals for performance, to take part in Sonica Glasgow, 19 – 29 September 2024.

The deadline for entries is Monday 4th December 2023.

Sonica is an 11-day biennial festival in Glasgow, dedicated to world-class visual sonic arts. The award-winning festival will present cutting edge work by international artists alongside emerging UK and Irish talent across the city.  

Cryptic are particularly interested in:

o Sonic installations for outdoor spaces and site-specific works for unique venues, places or spaces in Glasgow, and
o Artists who make live visuals for performance.

Artists from all backgrounds and any career stage, based in the UK or Ireland may apply. Performance works must include a strong sound and visual element. Installations, must contain sound.
All work must be complete and had at least one public showing. For  artists whi make real time visuals for performance, Cryptic will accept examples of previous work;

Please note that artists not in full time education and that Cryptic is not looking for work in any form of theatre, literature, comedy, circus or dance. Nor will Cryptic support commissions or the development of new work.

Cryptic recognises there is a need to provide opportunities to artists who are currently underrepresented within the sector and is particularly keen to welcome applications from artists identifying as:

o Black, Asian or ethnically diverse.
o LGBTQIA+.
o Women and gender expansive, trans umbrella, non-binary artists.
o D/deaf or disabled.
o Having caring responsibilities, and/or
o Working class or from a low socio-economic background.

Sonia offers:

o A fee of £750 – £1000 depending on the type of work (performance/installation/visuals) and artists’ level of experience.
o Travel, accommodation and per diems for artists based out with Glasgow when an overnight stay(s) are incurred.
o Support in sourcing basic technical equipment where possible.
o Support for install/de-install or technical support for performance.
o Venue hire, PR and marketing support.
o Documentation of your work.
o A platform for your work supported by an experienced, international arts company.
o An opportunity to take part in an international arts festival.
o An opportunity to build a new audience for your work, and
o Valuable opportunities to develop networks alongside exceptional international and emerging artists.
