For Valentine’s Day: The Valentine Charitable Trust – a significant grant-making Trust for charities in Dorset that are providing community facilities and/or protecting the environment (applications may be made at any time in writing)

THE VALENTINE CHARITABLE TRUST

The Valentine Charitable Trust awards grants averaging £7,800 to charities in Dorset, particularly those that are providing community facilities and amenities, as well as charities that are protecting and safeguarding the environment and wildlife.

The Valentine Charitable Trust is a significant grant provider for Dorset charities, regularly distributing grants totalling around £1 million annually. Grants tend to be for between £1,000 and £20,000.

The Trust is a relatively discretionary grant-maker with a specific interest in:

o The provision of such amenities and facilities for the benefit of the public as are not provided from public funds, and
o The protection and safeguarding of the countryside and wildlife, and the control and reduction of pollution.

The Trust’s policy is to make one-off grants to broadly the same group of charities on a regular basis, often providing core funding. However, it also makes awards outside of this policy, particularly to local applicants. The Trust also awards grants to charities operating overseas, especially for smaller charities in the ‘third and underdeveloped world’.

During the year ended 30 September 2021, the Trust made grants totalling £710,500 to 91 charities (2020: £1,125,000 to 135 charities).

Awards ranged from £1,000 to £20,000, with the majority being between £5,000 and £10,000. The average grant award was for £7,808 (2020: £8,363).

Details of all grant recipients over the last 2 years can be viewed on pages 17-21 of the Trust’s annual accounts.

Please note that the Trust does not maintain a website. Further information is, however, available on the Charity Commission website.
