GRIN members Dominie and Paul were delighted to attend the official opening of Cheriton Fitzpaine Community Shop on Saturday May 11. Dominie had supported its grant application to LEADER when she was Programme Manager for the REAL Devon LEADER scheme, while Paul had advised on the LEADER application and other grant opportunities.
The village decided it wanted a new shop after the previous village stores closed at Christmas.
It’s only taken the Cheriton Fitzpaine community 18 months from the date of their first working group meeting to the opening of the community shop – these type of project can take up to five years and sometimes more. Apart from LEADER, other funding was secured from the Princes Countryside Fund, Awards for All, Devon County Council Locality Grant funding (Councillor Margaret Squires) and a share offer which raised an impressive £34,000.
The ribbon was cut by Exeter Chiefs’ Rugby Union club captain, Jack Yeandle, whose family has close ties to the village.
