Newcastle City Council considers handing over its Public Parks to a Charitable Trust

Apr 18, 2017

Newcastle City Council has become the first local authority to consider handing over control of its public parks to a charitable trust.

The National Trust has been advising the council, and a £237,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop the plans was awarded, under the condition that findings will be shared with other local authorities.

The model has emerged as a solution to concerns that squeezed budgets mean the maintenance of parks is becoming ever more difficult.

A report by the Commons Communities and Local Government Committee in February raised warnings about the long-term sustainability of the parks system because councils are not legally obliged to provide them.
