Final round of the Strategic College Improvement Fund opens to applications (application deadline 29 March 2019)

The Strategic College Improvement Fund provides grants of between £80,000 and £200,000 for Further Education colleges and sixth-form colleges in England that were graded “requires improvement” or “inadequate” at their most recent Ofsted inspection for any of the following judgements:

o Overall effectiveness;
o 16 to 19 study programmes, adult learning programmes, apprenticeships, traineeships, provision for learners with high needs and 14 to 16 full-time provision;
o Leadership and management;
o Quality of teaching learning and assessment;
o Personal development behaviour or welfare; and
o Outcomes for learners.

The aim of the Fund is to provide colleges that need support to improve the ability to work with a stronger ‘partnering’ college and together they will create an action plan to tackle the issues they face.

Eligible activities could include:

o The coaching of managers and other staff to improve their performance;
o Instructional programmes to enhance staff skills to support teaching, learning and assessment;
o More effective use of data to improve student performance;
o Improved support to students, including better control over student attendance;
o Enhanced design of the curriculum;
o Strengthened relationships with employers (for example, via enhanced work-based learning); and/or
o Monitoring and evaluation of the results of the programme of work.
