Deadline for Great British High Street Awards 2019 extended

As with previous years, the deadline for the Great British High Street Awards 2019 has been extended, suggesting a shortage of entries.

The new deadline is this Thursday, 11 July 2019.

The Great British High Street (GBHS) Awards present an opportunity for councils, businesses, community groups and volunteers to learn from the leading examples of the ways in which high streets are succeeding in overcoming the challenges of a rapidly changing environment.

The prizes are:

o Champion Award: Four National Winners will each win £5,000 to be used as a contribution towards a street party on the winning High Street, a local community initiative or a sustainability programme.
o Rising Star Award: Four National Winners will each win £5,000 to be used as a contribution towards a street party on the winning High Street, a local community initiative or a sustainability programme.
o High Street of the Year Award: The overall UK winner from the Champion category will be chosen as the High Street of the Year and will win £10,000 to be used as a contribution towards a street party on the winning High Street, a local community initiative or a sustainability programme in addition to their Champion Award Prize.
o Rising Star of the Year Award: The overall UK winner from the Rising Star category will be chosen as the Rising Star of the Year and will win £10,000 to be used to be used as a contribution towards a street party on the winning High Street, a local community initiative or a sustainability programme in addition to their Rising Star Award Prize.
o High Street Hero – you can nominate those Independent Business owners and employees who are the unsung heroes of your high street on the nomination page. This Award celebrates the exceptional individuals within our communities who run initiatives and projects to improve the high street experience for all. The High Street Hero nominee must be a High Street Independent Business owner or employee to be eligible (an ‘Independent Business’ is defined as any business that has 4 or fewer businesses nationwide or internationally). Nominations close at 23.59 on 22nd July 2019.

High Street Shortlisting

Once entries close, all of the Champion and Rising Star entries will be provided to an independent judging panel who will assess all entries to shortlist the applications to 40 finalists. The shortlist will be announced on the 7th August 2019.

There will be 12 shortlisted finalists in the Champion High Street category (3 each from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and 28 shortlisted finalists in the Rising Star High Street Category (10 from England, 7 high streets from Wales, 7 high streets from Scotland and 4 from Northern Ireland).

Each of the shortlisted high streets will be notified and congratulated via email and will receive a link to
promotional materials and tips on how to get your community behind your entry.

High Street Hero Shortlisting

All High Street Hero applications will be reviewed by an independent judging panel and the Daily Mirror who will select a list of 40 shortlisted nominees (10 each from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The shortlist will be announced on the 7th August 2019.

Judging

All shortlisted high streets will be visited by the Great British High Street Judges who will assess them against their original entry. This accounts for 80% of the overall score with the final 20% being determined by public voting on the website, to show the support of your community.

All High Street Hero nominations will be initially judged by an independent judging panel and the Daily Mirror who will select 40 shortlisted nominees. The shortlisted nominees will be featured in the Daily Mirror before being judged to select the 4 national winners.

The Winners

All of the shortlisted finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in London in November where the winners will be announced, celebrating the high streets that are succeeding and influencing change.
