Applications are currently being accepted for the VIA Arts Prize. The deadline for applications is Sunday 27 September 2020.
The VIA Arts Prize is the UK’s only Ibero-American-themed arts prize, inviting UK-based artists to submit original works inspired by Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese arts and culture.
VIA is hosted annually at the Embassy of Brazil in London, in partnership with ACALASP (the Association of Cultural Attachés of Latin America, Spain and Portugal), supported by Instituto Cervantes and People’s Palace Projects, and sponsored by Itaú.
As a response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2020 edition of the VIA Arts Prize will take on a special format. The 30 shortlisted works will be exhibited online at the VIA Arts Prize official website from November 2020. As the social distancing measures brought on by the pandemic are set to continue for some time within the creative industries, VIA organisers have therefore decided to adapt this year’s awards, taking this as an opportunity to support more artists and reach wider audiences during these challenging circumstances.
The following prizes will be awarded:
First, second, and third prize winner artworks will receive £2,000 plus the chance to put on a group exhibition at the Embassy of Brazil, to take place in the first semester of 2021 ( subject to social distancing conditions permitting).
Additionally, there will be a “People’s Choice Prize” awarded by visitors to the online exhibition and the winner will receive a f 1,000 prize, as well as a secured place in the winners group exhibition.
The Award is open to all UK-based artists of any nationality. Participants must be aged 16 or over. All artworks must be original and not previously exhibited (with the exception of degree show pieces). They must not infringe the copyrights or intellectual property rights of any person or entity. Artworks must not violate the privacy of any person, nor can they have any sexually explicit, violent or racist content. Only works by individuals or collaborative partnerships will be considered.
Creative artworks in different formats will be accepted for submission:
- Mixed Media/ assemblage;
- Video art, including recorded performance and animation.
- Digital print (non-photographic); and
- Textiles and tapestry.
Each artist or collaborative partnership can submit only one piece of work. Submissions must be made by individuals only, not institutions, and can be solo or collaborative. Works entered:
- All submitted works must be specifically inspired by artistic or cultural expressions from Latin America, Spain or Portugal. Applicants must clearly demonstrate how the work is inspired by this particular artist, artwork or cultural expression within their application;
- Must not be replicas of already-existing works;
- Must be the sole and original work of the entrant or collaborative partnership;
- Must be easy to transport and made of non-perishable material.
